Our culture has a peculiar relationship with gravity. On the one hand, it is our matrix, the foundation of our skeletal system. Gravity has shaped our bones, ligaments, fascia, tendons, and muscles into what they are today. Children grow thanks to gravity; it is our bodies’ sparring partner.
No sooner have we become adults than gravity turns against us. From now on, it wants to harm us, pulls us down, makes us shrink, elongates our breasts and noses, and causes wrinkles and sagging cheeks. And because everyone shrinks as they age, shrinking is considered normal. There’s nothing you can do about it—that’s just the way it is.
Benita Cantieni says: “Under the force of gravity, we confuse ourselves with the apple. But we are the tree. It doesn’t fall; it doesn’t shrink.”
