Why do so many people find it so difficult to treat their own bodies with care?

The Interaction Between Body and Mind

The book *Embodiment* explores how the body, mind, and soul interact, complement one another, and are interdependent, from various perspectives. It is high time to reclaim humanity’s most important instrument of experience: the body.

In her book, Maja Storch explores why and how the psyche resides in the body. Wolfgang Tschacher explains why separating the mind from the body cannot work. Gerald Hüther describes how a well-functioning brain and a well-functioning body are mutually dependent. Benita Cantieni offers a pragmatic approach: reclaiming the body.

Sit up straight. Get comfortable in your body.

“A person’s outward demeanor reflects their inner state of mind. Strong emotions don’t just play out in the mind; they also become evident on a physical level. An athlete throws their arms up in the air in joy at their victory. A child whose mother buys them the toy they’ve been longing for hops up and down with excitement. And soccer fans—whether in the stadium or in their living room—can’t stay in their seats when a goal is finally scored. But negative emotions such as sadness, frustration, and anger also find their way to the surface—in drooping corners of the mouth and worry lines. A person’s body language is shaped by what is going on inside them. The transition between thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations is fluid. Many idioms articulate this connection: “to hang one’s head,” “to get a punch in the gut,” to be “haughty,” or to be “crushed.” Conversely, a typical posture also shapes a person’s inner attitudes and values. Someone who constantly makes themselves appear smaller than they actually are by hunching their shoulders forward may thereby foster a persistently gloomy mood. There is an interaction between the body and one’s mental state that is closely intertwined and interconnected. Thus, the way someone sits or stands influences how they process information.” (Source: Institute for Self-Management and Motivation https://www.ismz.ch)

Book: Embodiment: The Interaction Between Body and Mind (2022)

For the 4th edition, the entire text has been updated and revised.

Why do so many people find it so difficult to treat their own bodies with care? Why is engaging with one’s own body often associated with embarrassment? Why is someone who can spin cubes in the air and memorize long lists of words considered intelligent? Why do people so readily cede authority over their physical bodies to a science that breaks them down into seemingly unrelated parts?

Benita Cantieni’s vivatomic® Body Awareness

“Conventional medicine counts the human body from top to bottom. The topmost vertebra is the first. The bottommost vertebra is the last. Those who think this way also move this way. Those who move this way shrink. Those who move this way are heavy. Those who move this way put themselves under pressure. Everything presses down from the top. Day in, day out.

A body under pressure is—a body under pressure. People put pressure on their own joints. Joints under pressure sustain damage and break down over time.

This, in turn, pleases conventional medicine. Ailing bodies need ointments and medications. A billion-dollar market. Ailing joints need surgery and joint replacements. A billion-dollar market. Why should conventional medicine change what makes its practitioners rich?

We have to do that ourselves—you and I. The new edition of the book *EMBODIMENT: Understanding and Utilizing the Interaction Between Body and Mind* explains how to do it.

  • From a psychological perspective (Maya Storch).
  • From an evolutionary perspective (Wolfgang Tschacher).
  • From a neurological perspective (Gerald Hüther).
  • From my vivatomic perspective.

“I promise you’ll have many ‘aha’ moments as you read—’Oh, so that’s how it works?’ I promise you’ll experience a sense of physical bliss as you put the ideal embodiment into practice, starting from your bones.”
